VOCATIONAL EDUCATION PROJECT
The problem of unemployment, among women and youth in particular, poses a great challenge to the development of our communities. At the root of the problem is the lack of transferable skills among this target group – especially in the rural communities. WUEE is working hard to change these issues! WUEE is partnering with ActionAid Nigeria and the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) to provide free training in 9 relevant trades for youth and women in 5 rural communities in Akwa Ibom state.
With support from ActionAid Nigeria, WUEE is constructing a modern vocational skills acquisition center in the Ediene Attai community, Oruk Anam LGA. This center, which will be equipped by the government through NDE, is projected to benefit about 100 women and youth annually and create employment for 30 people.

IMPROVING ACCESS & QUALITY
WUEE collaborates with ActionAid Nigeria and the government to improve the quality of education in Akwa Ibom State through providing technical support to school-based management committees (SBMCs) in our target communities. The SBMCs supported by WUEE and ActionAid Nigeria are playing a key role in improving access to education, enrollment and completion of school. We also work with school management to aid in curricular activities and discipline among teachers and pupils to foster a child-friendly environment.
Our communities have seen positive outcomes from our work and we are continuing to expand our reach to include more communities, especially in poor rural areas.
SUPPORT FOR ORPHANS & VULNERABLE CHILDREN (OVCs)
Although basic education is now free in Akwa Ibom State, OVCs in many rural communities still have challenges accessing education. Some of their challenges include lack of school uniforms and other school materials. WUEE is presently supporting 800 OVCs across 5 community schools with books, school bags, uniforms and school sandals. Additionally, we support psychosocial activities meant to improve self-confidence amongst the OVCs we work with. We hope that our multipronged approach will aid in OVC retention in schools.
